The need for discussion

The Jewish people can be deeply proud of their rich history of intellectual tolerance and pluralism. We recognise and have always recognised the value of debate and disagreement.
To stray from this tradition on any topic, and retreat into dogma, is a mistake. To do so when it comes to the politics of Israel, an issue of immense importance, is a grave mistake.
Jewish students, future leaders of the community, must be allowed and encouraged to engage with a range of views. The alternative to discussion is silence, the diminishment of ourselves and abandonment of our values.
I'm deeply proud to throw my support behind this campaign. I have every confidence that when peace comes, it will be because we ran towards, and not away, from the most difficult discussions.
